Profile--Title Pending

Publication: Kalamazoo Gazette

Twenty six year old Daniel Martinez is working on a new concept in a new downtown office in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This new concept stars the Biggby Coffee Company that calls Kalamazoo its home, while it is currently working on expanding throughout the country. The various visual scenarios for this potential client are in the works, but Dan reveals the slogan for the concept, ‘Biggby Coffee—Just for Drinking.’ This is one of his team’s “big projects” says Dan.
Dan is the co-founder and co-owner of Rhino Media Productions whose new office sits on Rose Street across from the Amtrak station. Its big picture windows, high ceiling, and open layout give its team of Media Ninjas room to roam while they fill the whole space with creativity energy. There’s a bottle of mouthwash sitting next to Dan and his big Macintosh computer that his uses for his video editing. He caught me eyeing the mouthwash inquisitively as he finished up a bit of work. “I hate coffee breath, there’s nothing worse”, he states, a smile breaking across his face dissipating his concentrated features as explains, turning his attention away from the screen.
I am whisked away in his beige Honda, Dan is always on the go. He is wearing his Friday casual: jeans, business loafers, and his Rhino Media polo. His black hair is cut short. A genuine people person, he tells me about his life with ease. “Everyone has a story”, he insists. That’s what he walked away with after his time spent in Africa. One of his biggest life questions—“How can I tell people’s stories”. While a contract with Biggby doesn’t exactly answer this question, Dan isn’t concerned. He is however confident that as Rhino Media continues to grow, and crash through new boundaries, like the one standing between personal narratives and advertising perhaps, that they are “on the verge of something big”.
Dan’s co-partner at Rhino, as founder and owner, is Kevin Romero who is pitching Rhino’s promotional video ideas to Biggby’s Corporate Division today. Back when Rhino Media was still in its “pipe-dream” stage, the members of the team spent much of their time at Kyle yle Kinney’s Biggby Coffee Franchise on Stadium Drive. After making some promo-videos for local franchise owners such as Kyle, Rhino caught the interest of ‘Biggby Bob’ at Corporate.

  1. Cool topic and timely too--the media group is pretty new, yes? I like that you're telling the story of the company through a profile of the main guy. He seems like an interesting person with interesting life experience. One thing there though: Africa? You mention that he spent time there, but I'd like to know when and why.

Did you interview Kevin Romero as well? I can't tell from your piece, but it seems to cut off a bit short at the end, so perhaps there's more coming. I'd like to see more quotes in the piece, to hear about the company in the actual words of its owners.

Good start! I look forward to reading the finished piece.

  2. Elaine—

I think I like that you insert yourself in the piece--although I guess you'll have to make sure when you write the entire piece. I also love the mouthwash scene—how ironic that he hates coffee breath! I love this detail, and would love more description as you expand your piece. Is Dan a coffee addict? Does he actually frequent Biggby? Is he sick of the coffee?

When you say “Dan is always on the go” I wanted to know where he rushes off to all the time. What is he busy with? How exactly does he spend his day? What is the inside state of his car if he’s such a busy bee? Does it reveal anything about his personality?

I’m also curious--how is what Daniel doing a “new concept”? And why is he where he is? Where did he go to school? Who are his competitors? What kind of a business atmosphere does Kalamazoo have? What’s the conflict or tension in this piece?

I guess what would make this interesting for people not necessarily interested in business stories is to make sure you focus on the personality and quirks of your characters—which it seems like you have started to do. I was actually more interested in knowing about what Dan was doing in Africa more than anything else! So I guess you want to make sure you are writing the right story and adding details that enhance but don’t distract from the piece as a whole.

  3. Elaine - this feels very short to me. Is it complete?

I'm going to say to you the same thing that was said to me when I inserted myself into my piece on the Kalamazoo Model Railroad Historical Society - What is your connection to these people/this story? I love that I'm getting your perspective, but why?

I really love the description you go into in this. It is very vivid and makes a potentially less-than-exciting topic very nice to read.

In the end, I was left wanting just a little bit more. Why was Dan in Africa? What does he wear when it isn't Friday? Etc.

Great start! I can't wait to see where you go from here.

  4. Hi Elaine,

I am really intrigued by your subject matter here. I want to know what it's like to work for Rhino and their creative thought processes. I love how unconventionally you paint the office environment. I think this is a great profile topic, and you should allow yourself to really delve into their culture and figure out what makes them tick. I was a little confused about the Biggby campaign; do they mean, only made to drink as opposed to other uses for coffee? It's a good lead, but I wasn't certain I understood.

Keep digging; I'll look forward to see what you find!

  5. Elaine,

I love your descriptions, both of Dan and the building where he works. The bit about the mouthwash is great. I am intrigued by this title of "Media Ninjas" and think you can expand more on that. (Will you be a Media Ninja when you work for him this summer?? That would definitely be a resume stopper.) Also, where did the name Rhino Media come from?

At this point, I'm not exactly sure if you're profiling Dan or his company. Honestly, I think you can do either. It could be really cool to profile the company through Dan.

Since you'll be working for them this summer, it could be cool to add in what attracted you to the business and to Dan as a boss.

I was confused by Dan's slogan for Biggby. What else could you do with coffee if you don't drink it?

    Great start!

    Alaina
